Singing Lessons
Teaching Philosophy
Singing Lessons with Abbey are catered to each student’s goals.
Everyone wants different things out of their lessons. Specific skill improvement, artist development, self-confidence. As your teacher, I will ensure that I am giving you the right kind of support to reach your goals.
Some vocal focuses I am passionate about sharing are proper breathing techniques while singing and utilising expressive skills while performing.
I also aim to educate my students on vocal health processes to prevent vocal injuries (oh yes, this is a real thing). We run through lots of vocal warm ups and exercises throughout our lesson to keep our voice healthy and sounding beautiful.

Not at all! Monarch Music welcomes singers from all ability levels. We all have to start somewhere and we make sure each student’s lessons are catered to your ability and goals.

o Before we begin singing, we will have a chat about what sort of music you like and what you would like to get out of lessons.
o Then I will lead you through some vocal warm-ups. Just like in sport, we need to warm up with some simple exercises before we begin practicing.
o We will then start working on a song of your choice. You’ll sing through it once and then we’ll break it down and target the areas that need some extra help.
o We will then go through a few more songs following the same process.
o If you are interested, we can also look at holding recording sessions in our lessons.

Some helpful things to bring to your lessons are:
o A water bottle
o Student song folder. This will be given to you at your first lesson. It is a tool used to keep track of the songs you have learnt and to assist in at home practice.
o Some songs that you want to learn. While I will suggest songs, the song choices are completely up to you. Choose something that you enjoy singing and that suits your style.

I totally understand! Singing can make us feel vulnerable but it can also be such a fun way for us to create, share and learn.
Our lessons are a safe space for you to explore your musical style and skill. Absolutely no judgement is made about your ability. The fact that you decided to show up is a big deal!
I encourage you to give things a go and if mistakes happen, that’s absolutely fine. It’s one of the best ways to learn.

Pick songs that you enjoy singing and that suit your voice but also pick something that challenges you. Maybe it’s a song that has some notes that aren’t usually in our range. Or maybe it’s a song that involves a new skill like vibrato or improvisation.

I strongly recommend practicing at home. Practicing at least 2-3 times a week will definitely pay off and improve your skills. Make sure you warm up first! Recorded warm-ups can be requested.
-
Other instrumental lessons (e.g - guitar, piano, ukulele) can be requested but may not always be available.
